Caleb is first mentioned in the Bible, at age forty, as one of the two spies (out of twelve) who encouraged the Israelites to take the land of promise (Num. 14). Because of his and Joshua's faith, they were the only ones allowed to enter. At the age of eighty-five, Caleb again shows up on the pages of Scripture driving out the Anakites, claiming Hebron as his own (Josh. 14:6-15). Later he became the father-in-law of Othniel, the first "judge" (Judg. 1:12-15).
